Kaupapa Maori Music Week

Puatatangi, the Music Committee of Toi Maori Aotearoa has organised a week of Maori music workshops and shows in Wellington at the end of October.

Puatatangi Chairperson, Ngahiwi Apanui says the week-long programme is a first for Puatatangi and it’s all about celebrating the growth and diversity in contemporary Maori music.

Ngahiwi says, “The week is a chance for people to enjoy the unique contemporary voice of Maori music from the organic sounds of taonga puoro (traditional Maori instruments) to the rhythm of rap. Maori musicians call on a huge range of influences but what makes their music distinctive is that they also draw on their Maori musical heritage.”

Kaupapa Maori Music Week begins with an events management training workshop for those interested in working in the music industry (28-29 Oct), there’s a members night for APRA songwriters at The Mighty Mighty Bar (6-8pm, 29 Oct) and a Music Mentoring session for school students (31 Oct).

Puatatangi has selected some of New Zealand’s finest musicians to play at three shows in the Capital over three nights.

Performers include guitar legend Billy TK, international opera singer Timua Brennan, jazz diva Whirimako Black, hip hop crew 4 Corners and award winning Ruia.
