The brisk waters of the Bay of Islands (Te Pewhairangi) were once again be churned up by a fleet of 18 waka from Whakatane, Hamilton, Auckland and Te Taitokerau.

A total of 18 waka converged on the shores of Te Tii Beach at Waitangi for the annual waka pageant celebrations on Friday 6th February 2009.
Approximately 400 kaihoe attended the auspicious event. According to media reports, there was an estimated 20-25,000 people watching the waka making their approaches to shore and awaiting the arrival and positioning of the dignitaries aboard Te Aurere waka before a command was issued to raise all hoe from 18 waka present.
