MAORI MARKet 2007

World Class Contemporary Maori Art Exhibition will Premier in Wellington

A major Maori exhibition and sale of contemporary Maori painting, weaving, sculpture, jewellery, clay work, and jewellery in bone, jade, silver and gold is being staged in Wellington this weekend.

MAORI MARKet will be the largest ever collection of contemporary Maori art. It is being promoted by Toi MAORI MARKet Ltd and will feature work by more than 100 leading and emerging artists, including those from the successful exhibitions Maori Art Meets America in San Francisco in 2005 and Toi Maori: The Eternal Thread which has recently returned from touring the West Coast of America.

It will also feature contemporary artists who participated in the highly successful Kiwa and Manawa exhibitions at the Spirit Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver in 2003 and 2006.

Seminars on the arts, fashion shows, and live performances featuring top Maori musicians, story-tellers, Maori food, wine, and promotion of the best in Maori tourism offer a broad range of art and cultural experiences.

Toi Maori is a Trust that has been established by Maori artists to foster the growing Maori creative industries. Contemporary Maori art is highly prized and fetches top money in North America and Europe.

MAORI MARKet is a three-day exhibition being held at the Wellington TSB Bank Arena at Queens Wharf with a gala evening for invited guests on April 26 and it will open to the public from April 27 to 29 inclusive.

It is being sponsored by the Wellington City Council and Te Puni Kokiri and it will run every alternative year between the New Zealand International Arts Festival.

Toi Maori aspires to be the organisation of first choice for all matters relating to contemporary Maori art.
