Ming Ranginui

Te Ati Haunui-a-Pāpārangi  

 

Ming Rangnui, of Te Ati Haunui-a-Pāpārangi descent, completed he Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) at Massey University in Wellington in 2020. She furthered her studies in 2022 at Te Wānanga o Raukawa, specializing in Raranga (weaving). 

 

Ranginui’s work is characterized by he unique approach to sculpture, where she reimagines everyday objects using a combination of Whatu and Tāniko (traditional Māori weaving techniques) along with satin smocking. Her art often addresses significant themes such as Tino rangatiratanga (Māori sovereignty), spirituality, and survival, reflecting both her personal experiences an broader indigenous narratives. 

 

Ming’s recent exhibition at City Gallery Wellington, titled Matarau. Ranginui showcased pieces that are described as “pretty and impractical, but always impactful.” One of Ming Ranginui’s notable works includes a creatively transformed Daihatsu vehicle, adorned with ornate details that challenge conventional notions of functionality in art. 

 

Ranginui’s art often speaks to her experience and the complexities of contemporary life, particularly in the context of Māori culture and identity. Her work has been recognized for its ability to engage audiences on multiple levels, inviting them to reflect on the generational inpacts of colonization and the importance of cultural heritage.
