Kia Ora, ko Riarna Vulu tōku ingoa. I have just completed my degree at Te Herenga Waka, studying a Bachelor of Arts, Majoring in Public Policy and Political science. Throughout my studies I have developed a passion for advocating for and celebrating Māori in all areas of life. The Taihonoa internship has allowed me to transition from university into office life and has opened up opportunities for me to grow and develop my skills and knowledge.
Throughout my summer here, I will be focusing on contributing to End-of-year reporting and Policy review. I am particularly looking forward to exploring Māori culture and gaining knowledge around the Policy of Toi Māori Aotearoa. So that further on in my career I will be able to advocate for the development and celebration of Māori culture in the public sector, based on the experience I gain in this internship.
Post-Internship Statement:
Being at Toi Māori, I was surrounded by Māori language, immersed in Māori culture and exposed to te ao Māori. Going into the public sector, I can take from Toi Māori the impact that they have had on people. The opportunities that they offer through their programmes and committees for people to express themselves through arts is something that I definitely want to uphold.
Toi Māori’s support made my transition from uni to work life enjoyable, fun and it was well worth the time.
