Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki, Rongowhakaata
Hectorina Mulligan is a skilled Matanga Kai Whātu in Te Rito o Rotowhio and is a part of the New Zealand Arts and Crafts Institute at Te Puia.
Encouraged by her late mother, Hectorina sought to connect with her ancestors through raranga, feeling a deep sense of identity and purpose. Her Kuia’s simple weaving, integral to rural life, inspired Hectorina’s own craft. The Kete Kai holds special meaning to her for its simplicity and cultural significance.
Constantly inspired by taonga created by our tupuna, she is dedicated to preserving traditional weaving practices while embraing modern influences, ensuring that the craft remains vibrant for future generations.
