Te Whakatōhea
Paper, paint, wire, wood
Inspired by the work of Michael Parekōwhai, It’s a metaphor that explores the relationship between introduced species and New Zealand’s ecosystem. The piece features rabbits, representative of the invasive pests that disrupt natural habitats and contribute to the decline and extinction of native flora and fauna.
Through this metaphor, the work draws parallels between these rabbits and European presence in Aotearoa, inviting viewers to reflect on the impact of colonisation. Just as rabbits have overrun landscapes, altering the ecological balance, the narrative of Pākehā in New Zealand raises questions about cultural disruption.
In confronting this history, Oma Rāpeti challenges us to consider the consequences of human intervention and the responsibility we hold in nurturing and protecting the land we inhabit.
