Purapurawhetū. When someone special dies, their spirit joins the others in a wild tango across the night sky.” Purapurawhetū is the 1997 winner of the Chapman Tripp Theatre Award for Outstanding New Zealand Play of the Year. While the heart of this play expresses grief, loss and dispossession, we are also reminded of forgiveness and healing. In the book’s preface Grace-Smith acknowledges that “in order to move into the future we must make peace with our past.”
