In March 1993, Te Waka Toi: Contemporary Māori Art opened at the San Diego Museum of Us to begin a tour of five museums throughout the United States of America. Te Waka Toi is the first major tour of Māori art to the United States of America since Te Māori and the first to include contemporary Māori art. It’s aim was to make contact with the First Nations people of America. Taiarotia is the story of this tour told through the voices of the people who participated and over 100 colour and black and white photographs. Taiarotia also includes a complete catalogue of the exhibition, photographs of the works and extensive comments by the artists.
