Teresa Murray

Te Arawa, Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāti Ngāraranui

Teresa is a Matanga Kai Whātu at Te Rito O Rotowhio and is a part of the New Zealand Arts and Crafts Institute at Te Puia. Inspired to weave by her nan, Merepeka Naira King, and the late Noelene Matenga and Emily Schuster. Her weaving journey began in 1975 while working as a guide at Te Rito, where she learned from Emily Schuster and her roopu during free time. Teresa’s exposure to weaving sparked a life long passion. She transitioned from huiding to becoming a pouako and later a Kai Whātu, focusing on Raranga (weaving) and Whatu (twisting). Despite early challenges, her dedication paid off, and weaving brought her joy and fulfilment.

Teresa has been guided by many kuia and fellow weavers, whose wisdom has shaped her practice. Today, she weaves with the knowledge passed down through generations, a constant reminder of the legacy she is honoured to continue.
