Whakakai are referred to as the highly decorative ornaments that are worn around the neck. These are carved and fashioned from stone, bone, wood, plastic composite, and glass.
Māori artists are able to produce whakakai that have unique stories and whakapapa associated with their artwork. They are often worn in kapa haka and ceremonies, on special occasions, and used as a marker for Māori identity and ancestry.
