Huia is a multidisciplinary artist of Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāti Porou descent whose
practice is grounded in pūrākau and whakapapa, examining the dynamic relationship
between people and the natural environment. He specialises in drawing — a discipline that
has been fundamental in shaping his thinking and enabling the transition of his ideas and
understanding of three-dimensional form into whakairo.

The two pou whakairo parāoa presented here, Tū-ara-nui and Tū-aro-nui, represent ira
Wāhine and ira Tāne. Each ira holds its own tapu and mana. In relationship, they articulate
balance as an active and necessary principle — one that sustains oranga, affirms
whakapapa, and upholds the interdependence between people and the living world.
Together, they speak to continuity and responsibility, embodying the reciprocal forces that
generate and protect life.
